Sedans give a comfortable ride, an enclosed boot and lower running costs, which makes them the sensible default for commuting and small families. SUVs give ground clearance, higher seating and cargo flexibility, which earns its keep on unpaved surfaces or with a large family. Hatchbacks are the most practical small vehicle: easier to park than a sedan, more usable luggage space than the size suggests. Pick-ups and vans are working vehicles, so if you are hauling loads or running a business, start with commercial vehicles instead of passenger models.

Petrol vehicles cost less to buy and maintain, and fuel is available everywhere. UAE pump prices are reviewed monthly, so running costs move with the market rather than staying fixed. Diesel returns better economy over distance and dominates the commercial segment, where fuel is a line on the P&L rather than an occasional expense. Hybrids cut consumption in stop-start traffic and need no charging infrastructure at all. Electric vehicles have the lowest running costs of the four, but they depend on charging access, which varies by emirate, so the question to ask is where the vehicle parks overnight.

The driver-assistance features that earn their place in UAE conditions are blind-spot monitoring for multi-lane highways, a rear-view camera for parking, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning on long motorway runs. Adaptive cruise control reduces fatigue between emirates.

For everything else, compare what you will touch every day. Bluetooth or smartphone connectivity, climate control, parking sensors and keyless entry. In this climate, add two more: how well the air conditioning actually cools, and whether the windows are tinted. Leather seats, sunroofs and premium audio are pleasant and rarely decisive. Built-in navigation is the one to be sceptical about, since it dates badly and your phone does the job better.

Past the paperwork, the checks are physical. Does the air conditioning cool properly, and how fast? Is there corrosion around the door sills and boot seals? Does anything sound wrong on a test drive? Tyre wear and brake condition tell you how the last owner treated it, often more honestly than the service book does.

Check the paperwork first. A GCC-spec vehicle's registration history starts in the region, while an imported unit carries an import record. The manufacturer plate — on the door frame or under the bonnet — states the market the car was built for, and an authorised dealer can confirm the specification from the chassis number.

It matters because GCC-spec vehicles are built for regional conditions: upgraded cooling and air conditioning, corrosion protection and dust filtering. Start with the chassis (VIN) number. Official channels — the Ministry of Interior's Emirates Vehicle Gate and Dubai's RTA — let you check a vehicle's accident and registration record against its chassis number, and an insurer can tell you whether a claim is recorded against it.

Then match the paperwork to the car: the Mulkiya (registration card) should match the seller, and a financed car needs the bank's clearance letter before ownership can transfer. Outstanding traffic fines have to be cleared before the transfer goes through, so confirm them before you agree a price.
