Checking EVG fines is a must-do before buying a used car in the UAE. It’s a critical but usually ignored step. A car’s traffic fine history reflects the last owner’s driving habits. A car with repeated fines shows that it has been driven harshly and may have hidden wear and tear.

The vehicle’s pending fines don’t disappear during the ownership transfer. Rather, they become your responsibility. Hence, it’s critical to wipe out any pending EVG fines before your purchase.

In this article, we will define what EVG is, explain its importance, and guide you step by step through the whole process. Read the article to know how to avoid unexpected expenses and make the process of purchasing a used car in the UAE less stressful.

What is EVG, and why does it matter?

Emirate Vehicle Gate is a government-verified online portal in the UAE. It is the central hub for dealing with vehicle-related services. The ultimate goal is to improve your experience by offering a trustworthy process of controlling vehicle ownership and usage. You can check fines, renew registration, or manage insurance with EVG.

EVG allows you to check and pay traffic penalties across multiple emirates. It also accesses your vehicle registration information and updates or renews insurance related to your vehicle registration.

It is necessary to understand that EVG only recovers fine information from the official police departments throughout the emirates. It does not impose fines on its own. As a result, when you check EVG for fines, you're seeing recent, authentic information directly from the authorities in one place.

EVG provides transparency between buyers and sellers. It's highly useful for used car buyers. It centralises important information, saving you from checking with multiple authorities one after another.

Prepare Your Information

EVG requires you to enter certain information to check the fines for a vehicle. Preparing your information in time is necessary. Make sure that you have the following information:

  • The Vehicle Plate Number: Displayed on your car’s license plate
  • Chassis Number (VIN): Found on your vehicle registration card
  • Traffic File Number: Located on the driving license or vehicle registration card (Mulkiya)
  • The Emirate where the Vehicle is registered: Mentioned on the vehicle registration card

Plus, you must have a UAE Pass or Ministry of Interior (MOI) credentials. These are required for a secure login. The UAE Pass is widely accepted and streamlines the process.

Step-by-Step Guide to Check EVG Fines

Checking EVG fines for a car is a free-of-cost process. It helps you access the most recent and accurate information. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to check EVG fines. Go through the steps given below:

Step 1. Visit the EVG Official Website

Open your browser. Search and open the EVG Official Portal. After you land on the homepage, find the "Fine Inquiry & Payment" option. Click on it for further processing. This section is specially intended to check and pay traffic fines.

Step 2. Log in via UAE Pass or Credentials

For security reasons, you must have to log in. You have two main login options. Either use UAE Pass and EVG account credentials.

UAE Pass is the easiest and quickest login option. If you already have the UAE Pass installed on your phone, you just have to authorize the login request. If you have an EVG account, simply enter your credentials.

Step 3. Enter Vehicle Information

After logging in, the system will require you to provide the correct information about the vehicle. You have to enter the vehicle's license plate number, emirate where the vehicle is registered (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, etc.), chassis or VIN i.e. your vehicle's unique code, which is normally located on the registration card, and traffic file number which is optional in some circumstances, but useful for more accurate searches.

Note: Don’t forget to double-check the spelling and numbers you enter. Even minor typing errors can provide misleading results.

Step 4. Review All Listed Fines

Once you have submitted the information, the system displays any outstanding fines linked to that specific car. You’ll see the date of violation, the type of violation (e.g., speeding, parking violations, reckless driving), and the total payable amount for each violation.

A big list of fines shows that the previous owner was a careless driver. It's a red signal, and you should rethink buying that car.

Step 5. Decide How to Clear the Fine

You have two choices. Either you pay the fine yourself or ask the previous owner to clear it before the ownership transfer. If you've previously agreed with the seller or are ready to accept responsibility, you can pay immediately using EVG's secure payment platform.

Asking the seller to clear the fines is the better choice. Make it a condition before transferring ownership. Plus, you must seek certified documentation of payment from the seller.

Step 6. Download Receipts and Confirm Payment

Whoever (you or the seller) pays the fine, make sure you have proper paperwork for the payment. Download the payment receipt from the EVG portal. You should make a digital copy and print it if possible. Proof of payment is essential to avoid any stress.

Before completing the registration process, double-check that the fines have been marked as cleared in the system. It usually takes 24-48 hours or sometimes up to 3 days.

Tips and Common Issues of Used Car Buyers in the UAE

Each step of the EVG fines checking process is crucial. Be careful when purchasing a used car in the UAE. Here are some tips you can benefit from, and common issues faced by used car buyers:

  • Recent fines may not appear immediately: A new fine usually takes between 1 and 5 days to appear on EVG. If the seller claims to have recently cleared a fine, confirm after 24 hours.
  • Use MOI/ Police apps in parallel: Use the MOI UAE Website, Dubai Police, and Abu Dhabi Police e-Service apps for extra verification. These apps frequently provide real-time updates.
  • Always secure proof of settlement before purchase: Before paying for the car, make sure the seller provides you with valid payment receipts.
  • Double Check: Just because the seller says he has paid does not indicate the system has been updated. Double-check the EVG to avoid last-minute delays.

Using official platforms helps you to stay updated, lock in the best used vehicle deal, and save yourself from unwanted situations. So don’t forget to use only official sites and apps.

Final Thoughts

One should be careful when buying a used car in the UAE. It is critical to check for EVG fines. Regard it as part of your due diligence alongside checking the engine or reviewing the service history. Not doing it properly comes with serious consequences. An extra few minutes of checking helps you save thousands of dirhams and unnecessary trouble.

During the purchase process, you should always make sure that the previous owner has paid all the pending fines. Ask for the proof of payment before the transfer of ownership. Keep in mind that being more proactive now can help you avoid significant trouble later.
